YES on 48: Indian Gaming Compacts

This is a referendum. In 2013, the legislature approved gaming compacts between the state and two tribes: the Wiyot Tribe and the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians. These compacts were negotiated based on existing (and voter-approved) rules about how tribes can go about setting up tribal casinos.

I'm not a fan of gambling, whether on Indian land or any other way. But these two tribes followed the rules and they won support through the legislature. This referendum appears to be on the ballot because some other tribes want to block competition. I don't see any reason to reject these legitimately-negotiated compacts.

I am not convinced by the opponents' TV ads saying that this will "open the door" to lots more off-reservation casinos. These compacts do not change the underlying rules. If those opponents think there's a problem with the underlying rules, let's fix those, not punish the tribes who followed the rules. Oh, and BTW -- opponents have raised nearly 20 times as much as supporters.
